Mazes were created by the Celtic inhabitants of Ireland to calm the spirit. You can still find them in many locations across the island, where walking the lines of the maze is used as a type of meditation. The big difference between these circular mazes and the labyrinths of ancient Greece for example, is that they are places of contemplation, rather than a place for the uninitiated to get lost.
⠀
The patterns on this hat are my interpretation of these ancient mazes. The combination of Mosaic Knitting and Merino Singles results in a wonderfully soft, yet warm fabric. The hat matches the Uisneach Cowl; the pair can be made from just two contrasting skeins.
Difficulty
Intermediate, or adventurous beginner - Once you can knit in the round, you can make this hat. The colourwork is achieved by knitting specific stitches and slipping others, so it could not be easier.
