From the pattern description: The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, has a small collection of Ukrainian socks, one of which offered the inspiration for this design. All the socks in the museum are colorful and the designs are of patterns set in striped backgrounds. These socks are shaped like those found in Turkey, the Balkans and throughout the Middle East. They start either at the toe or at the top and are worked to the opposite end with the heel added in last.
