Ultra-Light Ankle Socks
I knit these lace-weight socks on the size of needle that I would normally use for fingering/4-ply socks, and cast on the same number of stitches. The result is a sock that fits a little differently to your standard socks. Select a size that is about 25 – 30% smaller than your foot circumference, and knit it the same length as your foot.
These socks are knitted top-down with the yarn held double for the cuff, heel, and toe. Choose a plied laceweight yarn, with a little added strength from something such as nylon, silk, or mohair. Or try knitting your socks with a single-breed yarn from a sheep with a long staple, such as Wensleydale or Teeswater. I wouldn’t recommend using a singles yarn: your socks would be likely to wear through in the twinkling of an eye.
