ULYSSES UNICORN TOY KNITTING PATTERN
This listing is for a pdf pattern for a toy unicorn. We call him Ulysses! He is straightforward to knit and makes a great gift for a little person.
SIZE
This knitting pattern gives instructions for one size of toy unicorn. However, you can knit him in any yarn size you want, with corresponding needle size, giving a smaller or a larger unicorn. As a rough guide, the main unicorn pictured in the pattern was knitted in a bulky / chunky yarn on size 10 (6mm) needles. He is about 12 inches / 30cm high. If you were to use a sport weight / 4-ply yarn and size 2.5 (3mm) needles, he would be about half size at 6 inches / 15cm high.
MATERIALS
If knitting in light worsted / DK yarn, you will need approx 1.2oz / 35g of the main colour. For a worsted / aran weight you will need approx 3.1 / 60g, and for a bulky / chunky yarn, approx 3.5oz / 100g. You also need a small amount of yarn scraps for the mane and tail.
This pattern has instructions to knit using straight needles (flat pieces), OR in the round using a circular needle. If knitting in the round, you can avoid much of the sewing up! You will need to use the magic loop technique to knit the small pieces in the round, a tutorial for this is included. If you are not so comfortable with knitting in the round, or do not have a circular needle handy, then the pattern pieces can be easily knitted on straight needles, and sewn up later.
The pattern knits each body part separately, then these are stitched together to create a unicorn of pleasing structure. Soft and slightly floppy in the limbs, yet firm enough to sit up unaided. The mane and tail are made from yarn scraps, attached using a crochet hook and carpet knots.
DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS
This is not just a knitting pattern, it is a 32 page project book! It contains full instructions on how to create the toy unicorn, and also descriptions of how to follow the directions and sections of techniques used with pictures and step by step instructions. Great for novice knitters, or if you just need a bit of extra help. But it still works for experienced knitters!
