The Umlaut Beanie is a very quick knit, and perfect for keeping you warm. Worked up in the round on 15 mm needles, this hat usually takes 30 mins – 2 hours to complete - you can start knitting it in the morning and have it ready for an afternoon walk! Pompoms can be added as a finishing touch, but are not necessary.

Whether using super bulky wool or multiple strands of scrap yarn held together, this is a great project suitable for beginners as well as more experienced knitters looking for a quick and simple hat design.

This pattern is written for 5 sizes (newborn baby to large adult). For more details see the size chart provided.

Materials:
15 mm circular needles/DPNs ** (or size required to give correct tension)
1 stitch marker
Tapestry needle
Pompom maker (optional)
** A 40 cm (16 in) cord is recommended, or you can use a longer cord with the magic loop method. For the smaller sizes you will need to use magic loop due to the low stitch count, or you may find it easier using DPNs.

Yarn:
The approximate amount of yarn you will need is given in the size chart provided. You can use either a super bulky weight yarn (eg The Wool by We Are Knitters or Crazy Sexy Wool by Wool and the Gang), or you can hold multiple strands of thinner yarn together - I achieve the same tension holding four stands of chunky yarn together, but feel free to experiment with different combinations of yarn weight! Any combination with which you can achieve the correct tension should work,

Tension:
7 sts x 10 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over stocking stitch in the round on 15 mm needles (or size required to give correct tension).
