Undertow is a playful collection of stitches. A trompe l’oeil that recreates crochet texture in two different ways, giving three-dimensionality and texture to a triangular shawl that is easy to construct and knits in the blink of an eye.

Notes on construction

Undertow is a triangular shawl woven from one vertex to the other so that the rows are horizontal. The stitch used on the body of the shawl is unique in that it creates an effect on the RS that looks like a crochet and maintains an equally beautiful wrong side similar to the seed stitch. The shawl is finished with a broken seed ribbing stitch trim.

YARN

This shawl is knitted, holding double yarn strands to give even more of a crocheted sensation.

Amounts may vary because of the type of yarn, personal gauge, and any changes made to the pattern.

Fingering weight yarn in 3 Colours

Colour 1 - C1 - 50 g / 225 m / 246 yd
Colour 2 - C2 - 50 g / 225 m / 246 yd
Colour 3 - C3 - 100 g / 450 m / 492 yd

NOTE: The amounts of Color A and Color B are too tight. To finish the shawl, you may need to undo your tension swatch or buy two skeins to be sure you have enough yarn.

Recommendation: To knit double-stranded, you will need to wind the skeins of C1 and C2 into two mini-balls (cakes). To do this, have your kitchen scale nearby while you wind the skein. Table the resulting ball when you have approximately half the skein wound to ensure that both cakes weigh 25 grams. (If you work with another yarn, your cakes should be half the weight of the original skein.)

NEEDLES

Main fabric: Circular needles 3.75 mm / 40 cm US 5/16” or size needed for correct gauge.

Trim Circular needles 3.5 mm / 80-120 cm US 4/32-47” o 0.25 mm / US 1 thicker than the size needed for the correct gauge.

OTHER ACCESSORIES

Tapestry needle, markers and 1 safety pin to show the Right Side of the garment.

GAUGE

18 stitches x 22 rows = 10 x 10 cm 4 x 4 ” in ENGLISH ROSE TWEED worked FLAT after blocking.
Being a shawl, the gauge is not essential, but it can change your yarn requirements as well as the final measurements of the garment if not adjusted properly.

Undertow es un juego de texturas, un trampantojo que recrea las puntadas del crochet de dos maneras diferentes y le da tridimensionalidad y textura a un chal triangular de construcción sencilla y que se teje en un abrir y cerrar de ojos.

Notas sobre la construcción

Undertow es un chal de forma triangular que se teje desde un vértice al otro de forma que las filas quedan en vertical. La puntada que se utiliza en el cuerpo del chal tiene de particular que crea por el LD un efecto que parece crochet y mantiene un revés igual de bonito similar al punto semilla. El chal se remata con un borde de punto semilla elástico partido.

HILO

Este chal se teje a doble hebra para dar aún más la sensación de punto a crochet.

Las cantidades pueden variar según el tipo de hilo, tu muestra de tensión y cualquier otro cambio realizado en el patrón.

NOTA: Las cantidades de Color 1 y Color 2 están muy ajustadas. Es posible que para terminar el chal necesites deshacer tu muestra de tensión o comprar dos madejas para asegurarte no quedarte sin hilo.

Recomendación: Para tejer a doble hebra vas a necesitar devanar las madejas de C1 y C2 en dos mini-ovillos (cakes). Para ello, ten cerca tu báscula de cocina mientras devanas la madeja. Pesa el ovillo resultante cuando lleves aproximadamente la mitad de la madeja devanada para asegurarte que ambos cakes pesan 25 gr. (Si trabajas con otro hilo, tus cakes deben pesar la mitad del peso de la madeja original).

AGUJAS

Tejido principal del chal: Agujas circulares de 3.75 mm / 40 cm US 5/16” o el grosor necesario para obtener la tensión correcta.

Ribete: Agujas circulares de 3.5 mm / 80-120 cm US 4/32-47” o 0.25 mm / US 1 más gruesas que el grosor necesario para obtener la tensión correcta.

Tensión (Galga)

18 puntos x 22 vueltas = 10 x 10 cm 4 x 4” en ENGLISH ROSE TWEED tejido EN PLANO, después de bloquear.
Al tratarse de un chal la tensión no es esencial, pero puede cambiar los requerimientos de lana así como el tamaño final de la prenda si no se ajusta a ella.

TÉCNICAS

Montaje de hebra larga (long tail cast-on).
Cierre elástico (elastic bind-off).
Tejer un punto derecho en el punto debajo (knit 1 in the stitch below).
