My husband enjoys J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories of middle earth - I think he owns every book. For years, the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings have entertained our whole family on long car rides.
He suggested this beautiful jewel-toned yarn with sparkles for a new dragon-inspired design. He was so excited. Who can pass up a great yarn suggestion from your spouse? I immediately envisioned the treasure hidden in the Lonely Mountain. This shawl pays homage to Tolkien lovers with gems hidden within the design.
I will give you one clue: there is a pattern of 13 slipped stitches and 2 eyelets in the lines that radiate out from the central spine. There were 13 dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo in the party who set off on the Unexpected Journey to the Lonely Mountain. I’d love to hear the other clues that you might find throughout the pattern.

Construction: Triangle shawl with increases at the edges and center spine. The shawl field contains radiating lines of slip stitches with 2 eyelets repeated down the length. A chevron lace border finishes the shawl edge. Beads (optional) adorn the picot bind off.

Needles: US 5 (3.75mm) Circular - 32” cable, or needle size needed to obtain gauge.

Yarn: MadelineTosh, Tosh Merino Light (90% Superwash Merino, 8% Acrylic & 2% Stellina; 420 yds/384 m; 3.53 oz/100 g skein)
2 Skeins, Spectrum-249

Yardage Used: 850-1020 yds

Beads (optional): 37 glass seed beads, size 6/0

Gauge: Using US 5 (3.75mm) 24 sts/34 Rows = 4” (10cm) square in stockinette stitch (Unblocked).

Special Techniques:
Knit & purl, cast on & bind off
Increases: yarn over, knit front and back
Simple lace: yarn over, knit 2 together, ssk (slip, slip, knit)
Picot edging
Working flat on circular needles
