Unicorn Splash Shawl
This project started as a no-brainer stash buster. I just wanted to get rid of this beautiful skein of variegated yarn that looked amazing on the hank, but awful when knitted. I can’t stand the colors pooling.
The first 6 inches went by and I got bored, so I decided to add a contrast color and work some texture into the design. That wasn’t enough though and I wanted to learn a new skill so I decided to add some lace. I’m not a fan of lace either.
To find a lace pattern I liked was challenging, but finally I found what I was looking for! A big thank you to my friend marydear from Mary E Rose Designs for charting my lace, she has been a very big help developing this pattern.
This pattern was originally released as an Instagram Knit-a-Long (re-posted to Twitter) on my Instagram account @artesanitarium (@artesanity on Twitter)
By the time this pattern is live and sold on Ravelry, the clues are taken down. Search the hashtag #unicornKAL2018 to see how the knit-a-longers did :)
The KAL did have it’s snaggs, but all the errata is now fixed in the pattern, and it has been test knitted and tech edited.
The shawl is worked sideways, adding 1 st every right side row by doing a yo. It consists of 9 different stitch patterns, 5 textured sections; Stockinette, Honey Comb and reverse Honey Comb, Linen Stitch and Half Linen Stitch and 4 cable and lace sections; two different Lace pattern, Slipped Cables and Mosaic Cables and they are all charted and have written instructions.
Notions:
• 1 stitch marker
• 2 cable needles
Final measurements:
• 160 cm (64 inches) in width
• 70 cm (28 inches) in height
Notes:
• Always slip the first st on the WS row purl wise.
• Using the yarn weight and gauge suggested you end up with a shawl that is as big as stated in “Final measurements”. However, a different yarn weight can be used but that will result in a bigger or smaller shawl depending on whether your yarn is thicker or thinner.
• Obtain the gauge will result in the right size, but might effect the yardage needed.
• The pattern is written so that if you run out of your main color too early, due to shifts in gauge or other unexpected things, you are able to knit a couple of repeats less than in the original pattern. To compensate for the length, just knit a couple more stockinette rows before the “Part 9: Lace Cable”.
• The pattern has charts and written instructions.
