Recycled cotton-shirt-yarn table mat, in the shape of a square; knitted in the round on double pointed needles. The yarn-cutting method, described in the pattern, produces rounded teddy-ears of fabric which enhance the texture. For a conventional version, the mat could be made with commercial or handspun, chunky wool, cotton or acrylic.

Requirements

Yarn
• Rag-yarn: Approx 28yd/25m of pure cotton shirt-weight rag yarn, cut into bias strips 0.25in/0.75cm to 3/8in/1cm wide. (Equivalent to less than a quarter of the usable fabric in a man’s large shirt).
Needles
• A single long, straight needle or a circular needle in size 5mm/UK6/US8, for casting on
• 5 x double-pointed needles - metric 5mm; UK and Canadian size 6; US size 8 (or size to suit your rag-yarn after swatching). Alternatively, 4 x dpns could be used with 4 x stitchmarkers.
Sewing notions to join strips of yarn when cutting, and for repairing broken yarn while knitting.
Tapestry needle with eye large enough for yarn
