This beanie is knitted in rounds on four double point needles (which can be substituted for circular needles if you prefer).
The Beanie sits loosely on the head but if you would like a snugger fitting headband drop a needle size just for the headband.
I have used handspun merino, fingering weight but any 4ply sock yarn should produce the same tension.
