Upcycled Lanterns
These lanterns are a great way to use old jars. My pattern includes some different designs and shows you how you can knit a cover to fit any size of jar. I also show how to make wire or yarn/ string handles for them.
I’ve included some simple holes patterns and also a honeycomb pattern, that you can add embroidered bees to for more impact.
You can make a lantern out of any size of jar– just make sure the opening is big enough to get your candle/ lights into.
I’ve used a variety of different ways to light them up:
• Tealight candles (be careful to check there is not danger of anything catching fire if using real candles) and don’t put the jar lid on when they are lit
• Plastic battery powered tealights
• Led lights with batteries
• Solar powered LED lights- for these you need to make sure the jar is the right size to slot the light unit in the top
i used double knitting (worsted) yarn, but you can use any weight as long as you use the correct size of needles.
This pattern is part of the Garden yarn Bomb e-book, which also has patterns for hanging insects and cheerful garden bunting.
