Ups and Downs
The pattern is the first of 5+1 patterns from the Friendship e-book.
Three different stitch patterns are used in this cowl to display zigzagging lines that run parallel. For me, it symbolizes that friends and family members care for each other whatever happens in their lives, and go together through any ups and downs.
The zigzag pattern is fun and the size of the cowl is adjustable, so it would make a great gift for any friend or family member you love knitting for.
A triangle is knit flat starting at one tip with increases at one side. Once it is bound off, the triangle is blocked and buttons are sewn on. The yarn overs in the lacework are used as buttonholes for buttoning up the triangle into a cowl shape. The sides of the cowl can be sewn together if the wearer does not like buttons.
The triangle can be easily enlarged: to get a deep triangular shawl, use the same pattern but work more repeats of charts. Note that altering the pattern will affect both the amount of yarn used and the finished dimensions.
