Salmon populations on the west coast have been in steady decline since the early 1800s. While overharvesting is a contributing factor, this decline is mostly due to habitat loss. The salmon must have access to deep, cool streams for spawning and as feeding grounds for the newly hatched young. Dams across major rivers have blocked access to hundreds of streams at once, cutting off entire salmon runs from their breeding grounds. Human development further restricts access as flood prevention and irrigation measures divert water and bury salmon streams underground. Logging and cattle grazing pose a serious threat to the quality of the remaining streams. If salmon are to survive we must be willing to share the waterways upon which they depend.
