Urban Butterfly Shawl
The Urban Butterfly is a top-down semi-circular shawl with an unusual construction. It is formed out of alternating triangular and rectangular segments branching out from 3 spines.
This is a good pattern for chart lovers. The pattern is straightforward to follow and the lace is easy to “read”, but with an 86 row non-repeating chart, you will never get bored of doing the same thing over and over.
Charts include instructions for optional beading.
Yarn: Lace, light fingering or fingering yarn in any fibre, as long as it can be blocked. Variegated yarns with short colour repeats are not recommended. Test knitters used: Malabrigo lace, 2/17 Wool Mill End, and Super Knits Bessie.
Size and Gauge: The exact gauge does not matter. Use a needle size that gives you a fairly loose, open fabric. If you want a larger shawl, go with fingering weight and approx 3.75mm/US size 5 needles. For a shawlette, go with lace weight and approx 3.25mm/US size 3 needles.
Materials: 8 stitch markers, large needle for weaving in ends, extra yarn for life lines (optional), 760 beads (optional), fine fishing line (for beading).
