Urban Festival Shawl
This shawl is a mash-up of Louise Tilbrook’s Fuss Free Festival Shawl (FFFS) and Yarnison’s Urban Hero Shawl.
The pattern is super simple, very memorable, and can harness the wildest colours. You’ll use a couple of techniques to create the wedges and the edging – German short rows and i-cords. The pattern talks you through both and they are very easy to learn. As with the FFFS, you can keep knitting as long as you want, saving enough yarn for the edging as instructed, and it will easily adapt to any gauge or weight that takes your fancy.
Yarn
You will need two contrasting skeins, and to achieve the dimensions of the sample, these would be 100g skeins of fingering/4ply yarn (approximately 420m/460yd each).
The sample uses:
MC – Countess Ablaze Lady Persephone Sock (75% BFL, 25% Nylon, 425m / 465yd, 100g) in ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’
CC – Mothy and the Squid Sock (75% Merino, 25% Nylon, 420m / 460yd, 100g) in ‘Iced Gems Citrine’ (this was a limited edition)
Needles and Notions
4mm (US size 6) circular needles (at least 60cm / 24in cable)
4mm double pointed needles (only 2 needed)
Stitch markers (optional)
Gauge
Gauge is not important for this shawl, but the sample is 23 sts x 24 rows = 10cm/4in over stocking stitch, blocked.
The size will vary depending on available yardage and yarn weight, but the sample measures
Inner edge: 188cm / 74in Outer edge: 292cm / 115in Bind off edge: 79cm / 31in
This pattern has been tech edited by James Bartley and test knitted by Catherine Aspinall, Louise Tilbrook and Heather Eyre
Errata
The first version of the file had an error missing off a row from the wedge instructions (whilst the pattern would still have worked without this row, it clears up some inconsistencies around ‘RS’ and ‘WS’ in the instructions), and it wasn’t clear that you should omit Wedge Rows 3 and 4 on the first wedge. Please ensure you have v2 of the file.
