Get out your kitchen scale and weigh your scraps: you’ll need 11 grams of a Main Color and 4 grams of 9 other colors. This charted pattern is knitted with 2 stands at a time. The chart in the pattern is pre-filled with the colors I used, but you can use any fingering weight yarn you have. Here’s what I used for the brown/green hat:

Knit Picks Palette fingering weight 100% wool:

  1. Caper 11g
  2. Lichen 4g
  3. Coriander Heather 4g
  4. Cream 4g
  5. Doe 4g
  6. Toffee 4g
  7. Hazelnut 4g
  8. Currant 4g
  9. Clover 4g
  10. Edamame 4g

I you are tight on the quantity of yarn you can choose not to swatch. Just lay out the colors in the order you like and record them with a note or a photo. Also you will save yarn (and your sanity) if you weave the yarn in as you go. Colors 8,9,and10 use the least amount of yarn so can get away with having 3 grams of these colors if you have to.

This is constructed by first making a 2 X 2 ribbing for 1 inch then you start the chart work.

You will need Size 2 circular needles, Size 3 circular needles, and Size 3 double pointed needles to finish the top of the hat.

This fits a head that is 21-23 inches in circumference.

The pattern is FREE and found on my blog.
