Utch
‘Utch’ – old Yorkshire / Northern dialect meaning ‘snuggle’. So, grab your needles and ‘utch up’ in these cosy fingerless mitts.
A pair of simple, classic fingerless mitts with many possible variations. The thumbs are picked up from waste yarn and knitted with straightforward increases. There is a simple yet effective edging detail to both thumb and hand. The real beauty of these mitts lies in their simplicity and in the pleasure of choosing a really lovely yarn.
They are a perfect way to use up those lonesome balls of precious wool (you can make a pair of mitts from one 50g ball of double knit).
To fit a ‘standard’ hand (my hands are small but chubby, these mitts were designed for the slim hands of my daughter. They fit me, just - to make them larger and keep the ribbing pattern, add 4 stitches to the cast on).
Gauge will affect sizing (if you are for example a very tight knitter) - the main thing is to keep a consistent gauge throughout. Standard gauge for the specified wool is 22.0 stitches.
