The Utu hat is a quick and easy basic hat for everyday use. With its classic twin cables and garter sections it makes a wardrobe stable that you keep reaching for over and over again. The hat is knitted with the softest merino boucle yarn, Woolfolk Flette, giving it a distinctive hazy look. (Utu means haze in Finnish.)

The hat is knitted from the bottom up in a round. The brim will be folded double for extra warmth. The hat comes in two sizes, a fitted version and a more relaxed, longer version. This pattern is suitable for knitters who are just learning to knit cables.

Yarn:
2 (2) skeins of Woolfolk Flette (100% merino, 120 m / 131 yards per 50 g) or 170 (200) m / 185 (220) yards of DK weight yarn. Note that due to the boucle nature of the Woolfolk Flette, you might need to swatch carefully if substituting it for other types of yarn!

Needles:
2.75 mm / US 2 circular needles with 40 cm / 16” cable
2.75 mm / US 2 circular needle with a cable suitable for the Magic loop technique, OR

Gauge:
25 sts x 40 rounds = 10 cm on 2.75 mm / US 2 needles over main pattern, worked in a round, after blocking. Always use the needle size that gets you the correct gauge!
