Valentine
IMPORTANT NOTE: This pattern is available in a tutorial video for FREE on my youtube channel. If you want the printable version, grab your copy here.
The valentine hat is a beginner friendly stranded colorwork hat. I’m a beginner when it comes to colorwork, so I walk you through the process in the video and there is an included colorwork chart as well as written instructions.
MATERIALS
YARN - Worsted weight:
- MC: 98 yards {90 m}.
- CC: 25 yards {23 m}
Sample uses: I Love This Yarn (100% Acrylic - 355 yards {325 m}/ 199g) in the colorways ‘Rosy Cheeks’ (MC) and ‘Ivory’ (CC).
NEEDLES
- US 8 {5.00 mm} 16″ (41 cm) circumference. Or size needed to match gauge.
- You will also need a longer cord length or DPNs for the crown decreases.
- Rib Needles 1-2 sizes smaller than gauge for the brim in 16” {41 cm}.
OTHER MATERIALS
Yarn Needle, Stitch Markers.
GAUGE
Stockinette Colorwork - Worked in the Round
- 17.5 sts / 23 Rounds = 4″ {10 cm}. I worked the swatch in the colorwork pattern, I found my plain stockinette stitch gauge was looser than the colorwork section. It balanced out when working the colorwork for the swatch.
SIZING
One Size
20.5” {52 cm} around by 8” {20.5 cm} long
This hat only has 0.5” {1.5 cm} of negative ease based on the average female head circumference. This is to prevent the colorwork section from stretching and losing the design when you wear it.
