Vampire Squid
Did you know that vampire squids are not actually vampires? They do have glowing red eyes and spiky tentacles that make them look like they came straight out of a horror movie, though! Here are some more fun facts about these fascinating deep-sea creatures:
-
Vampire squids live at depths of around 2,000 feet, where there is very little light and oxygen.
-
They have a unique strategy for avoiding predators: they can turn themselves inside out, exposing spines and webbing that make them look bigger and more intimidating.
-
Their scientific name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means “vampire squid from hell” in Latin.
-
Despite their scary appearance, vampire squids are actually harmless to humans and feed on marine snow and plankton.
-
They have the largest eyes in the animal kingdom relative to their body size, which helps them detect bioluminescent prey in the dark.
