My original intention was to see how the Vanilla Beanie Beanie pattern worked up in worsted weight yarn and ended up writing it as a separate pattern. I knit the body of the hat an inch shorter than the VBB and redesigned the crown decreases. It’s considerably less slouchy.

The yarn I chose was from my deep stash and was missing the ball band, but I had pinned a note to it saying that it contained 142 yards - about twenty yards shy of what I needed. I thought it would be a good match for this pattern, so I did some calculations and crossed my fingers. I actually had yarn left over

If you want to substitute fingering weight held double for the worsted, it will work, just double the amount of suggested yarn. Its textured broken rib pattern should make it ideal for variegated yarn, and I’m curious to see how it would knit up in handspun. If you have yarn left over from another project or a short skein you don’t know what to do with, this might be for you.

If you want yours to be more slouchy (and aren’t short on yarn), knit more inches in pattern before decreasing. That way you can fold up the brim if you want to. On the other hand, if you don’t want any slouch, knit it shorter. Make it yours.
