Vanini Beanie
It is with joy that I introduce the Vanini Beanie!
This design came about from my need for a crocheted hat pattern to use with super bulky yarn (6 weight) that did not work up ‘stiff’.
Worked from the top down - and from the inside out - this pattern creates a very gratifying texture. Non-traditional elements have been worked into a classic and timeless pattern. Some different techniques are used in the pattern which makes working through it fun!
Recommended skill level is intermediate - but if you are an adventurous /advanced beginner crocheter it might be a fun pattern to try out. After a few run throughs you should have it mastered.
It is recommended that a solid colored ’test hat’ be completed as your first hat. This will allow you to become familiar with the stitchwork before moving on to using multiple colors - and it will also allow you to determine which size (XS, S, M, L) will work for you for a standard sized hat.
The design was built around Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn - or yarns similar in thickness. Not all 6 weight yarns are created equal. You will not want your yarn to be ‘thinner feeling’ than Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. Malabrigo Rasta seems to like this pattern as well.
The special ‘joins’ used in the pattern are utilized to create a more subtle, almost invisible, back seam. This seam, however, will run on a slight diagonal. If you do not like a diagonal seam then this pattern may not be for you.
Grab your big crochet hooks. My preferred hook for the pattern is a 9.0mm (M/N-13) - but testers used anything from an 8mm (L-11) up to a 10mm (N/P-15).
Have fun! Solids, stripes and color blocking all look great on this hat! Gender neutral - play with colors to change the look from masculine to feminine!
