Varya means “protection” in Quenya, the language of the old Elves in J.R.R. Tolkiens world of
Middle-Earth. This beautiful hat protects from wind and cold and is a must-have during the colder
season.
Worked in a cozy yarn, it keeps you warm and is a fashionable accessory at the same time.
The hat is worked flat in back- and forth-rows, eliminating the need for double pointed needles. A
gauge swatch is not necessary because you don’t have to calculate stitches for the head
circumference.
Just knit until the hat fits around your head, then bind off the ends by placing all stitches onto one
knitting needle together. This will be explained in the pattern.
Needed materials:
- approx. 150 meters (164 yds) of aran weight yarn
- Single point knitting needle or circular knitting needle size 6 mm (US10)
- 2 stitch markers
- measuring tape for measuring the head circumference
- sewing needle
- scissors
- waste yarn for the provisional cast on
- crochet hook size 6 mm (US J)
Techniques used:
Basics, short rows, provisional cast on, right leaning increase, brioche
The pattern runs 9 pages, it contains charts, a written pattern, schematic, and a phototutorial for the horizontal ridge pattern.
Skill level easy to intermediate
