Velvet Moss Vest
The Velvet Moss Vest was inspired by cold rainy weather and the way it makes moss look on trees. Its deep, soft, matte appearance made me think of a deep green velvet fabric and feelings of fall and winter in the crisp air. I have also always loved the look of woven herringbone fabric, and I wanted to see if I could re-create a similar look to its woven counterpart with only knitting.
I encourage you to play with color combinations and yarn weights. The sample’s main color uses a fingering weight yarn held together with a lace weight mohair - which can create an interesting brand new color - but you could use a single strand of dk weight yarn instead. The main fabric is also entirely worked in mosaic knitting - meaning you are holding only either the main color yarn or contrast color yarn at any time.
This vest is worked flat sideways - starting at the wearers left underarm and working increases and decreases along to top edge to create the shape of the garment. The front and back is all worked flat as one piece, then is seamed using mattress stitch to the beginning of the cast on in the underarm. Then stitches are picked up around both arm holes, the neckline, and the hem to complete all the rib finishing in the round.
Sizes
- 1 (2, 3, 4, 5){6, 7, 8, 9} - Finished garment bust circumferences: 32 (36, 40, 44, 48){52, 56, 60, 64}” / 81 (91.4, 101, 111.7, 121.9){132, 142, 152.4, 162.56}cm
- Choose your size to match your desired garment bust circumference. This pattern is suggested to be worn with 2”-4” / 5-10cm of positive ease. Meaning the circumference of the garment is 2”-4” / 5-10cm larger than your bust circumference.
- Consult schematic on page 2 for garment measurements. Sample shown in size 2.
Yarn
- This pattern uses an unspun fingering weight yarn held with a laceweight strand of silk mohair together as the main color (MC). The contrast color (CC) is one strand of a sport weight color shifting yarn.
- You can of course use a spun fingering weight yarn in the place of the unspun yarn, and you could use a non-shifting colorway for the sport weight contract color yarn - use whatever yarn you like, that is available to you & can meet gauge.
- MC: Honer Och Eir - Nutiden: 100% Wool, 100g / 3.53oz yarn plate. Colorway: Håg. approx. 477 (540, 594, 657, 720){783, 837, 900, 963}yds total required.
- Held With: Dragonfly Fibers & Canon Hand Dyes - Faerie: 70% kid mohair & 30% mulberry silk, approx 450yds / 411m per 50g / 1.75oz skein. Colorway: Improvisations. approx. 477 (540, 594, 657, 720){783, 837, 900, 963}yds total required.
- CC: Spincycle Yarns - Nocturne: 100% non-superwash Merino Wool, 200yds / 183m per skein. Colorway: Snakeskin. approx. 356 (400, 444, 488, 532){576, 620, 664, 708}yds total required.
- Please Note: If you would like your vest to be longer than what is described for your size in the schematic on page 2, you will likely need more of all three yarns.
