A hallmark of Estonian Haapsalu shawl lace is the nupp, an elegant embellishment that kicks up lace a notch, with deep textrural accents. Vera-Ellen incorporates traditional Haapsalu lace in a less traditional triangular shawl shape. It is knit from the top down, starting with a garter tab, and uses an Estonian-inspired twig pattern that culminates in a lace nupp edging and an exaggerated picot bind off. Worked in fingering weight yarn to accommodate those new to lace knitting and/or nupps, the pattern is easily memorized with very pretty results.
