Verão (summer in Portuguese) is a light and airy stole knit lengthwise in the Shetland tradition (kinda), and it’s patterned on all rows. This is the first pattern from the e-book “Quatro Estações”.

This stole starts with a crochet provisional cast-on for the right corner of the lower edging. Once the lower edging is knit, stitches will be picked up and the side edgings and body are worked together. The stole is finished with a knit on upper edging and a small amount of grafting at the very end. It can be worked in any yarn from cobweb to lace weight.

My sample was done in heavy weight lace yarn. The sample was knit with Jaggerspun Heather 2/20 and size 3mm needles. It measures approximately 243.84cm (96in) x 80cm (31.5in).
For thinner yarns, I recommend going down on needle size (2.75mm)

It requires the basic skills for knitting lace (yo, dec…), short rows, grafting and a lot of patience.
You’ll also need lace yarn, needles in the range from 2.75 to 3mm, stitch markers, scrap yarn and a stitch holder.

A few notes:

Although a gauge swatch isn’t necessary, I recommend knitting a small sample in ST st and then washing and blocking so you have a better idea how your yarn will behave (and change needle size, if
necessary).

To avoid running out of yarn, before you start knitting, weight the yarn, the needles and stitch markers. Then after you work two repeats of the chart on page 4, weight your knitting and write that number down. That number (minus the weight of needles and
markers) is the amount you need to finish the stole.

The short rows can be worked using any method you prefer.

You can modify the length of the stole by adding or taking out a multiple of 5 body repeats.

I use the grafting method described here, hence the instructions for knitting with scrap yarn for the last row of the left edging and the last row of the top edging.
Other methods for grafting can be used, so feel free to ignore the instructions to use scrap yarn.
