This type of ski hat was ubiquitous in Vermont in the 1970s. The double layer around the bottom really keeps your ears warm! This pattern is adapted from verbal instructions from a knitter I chatted with in a Richmond, Vermont laundromat in 1976. I have been knitting this hat ever since.

The medium size will fit most adults. The large size is perfect for those whose heads are too large for the “one size fits most” hats (like me). The hat is worn with the ridge line going front to back, so the flat hat in the photo is the side view on the head.

I have made this hat with four ounces of many different brands of wool knitting worsted. Please check your gauge! I usually use leftover yarn for the stripes. You can certainly add more stripes and/or change the stripe width. The instructions are for the “classic” version, and perfect in school colors.
