Vertical Stripe Mitts
These fingerless mitts are fast, warm, and satisfying to make. They’re a fun way to practice 2-color knitting if it’s a new skill, and a super fast and rhythmic project if you’re more experienced. They look pretty cool too. If you need extra-warm mitts, and you need them quickly-this is the pattern for you. Get a head start on gift-giving season, and make some today! The pattern includes complete written directions, plus a chart of the pattern stitch, and a chart of the entire thumb gusset.
Yarn: Shown in Berroco Vintage in the colors MC: “Forest Floor”, and CC: “Fennel” or any other light worsted yarn. For the Adult Medium size, I only needed about half of a (217 yd/198 m) skein of each color.
Gauge: 6 sts/in (24 sts/4in, 24 sts/10cm) in pattern stitch- 2 color rib. To knit a gauge swatch flat, loop the yarn very loosely around the back of the work and work every row with the RS facing.
Needles: DPNs in size needed to get gauge. I used US size 4/3.5mm.
Notions: 2 stitch markers. Your choice of scrap yarn or stitch holders for thumb gussets.
Sizes: Three sizes. Adult Extra-small (6.5in/16.5cm around, 6in/15.25cm tall) Adult Small (7.3in/18.5cm around, 7in/18cm tall), Adult Medium (8in/20.5cm around, 7in/18cm tall). Select a size with at least .5in/1.25cm of negative ease.
Skills: Cast on and off, knit, purl, knit in the round, place stitches on holder, M1 increase, decreasing, two color stranded knitting (pattern includes tips).
Accessibility Notes: All charted sections also written, 12 point serif font with bolded and underlined headings, no columns (except for abbreviation key).
