The Verticore Hat is a warm, cozy hat with a double-thick band that combines vertical and horizontal patterns using a combination of mosaic and knit-one-below (K1B) slipped-stitch techniques. For each round, only one color of yarn is used.

The hat is worked from the bottom up, starting with a band made using the mosaic stitch and worked flat. Next, stitches are bound off to form a flap, and then the hat is joined in the round and the number of stitches reduced before knitting the body of hat and crown using the K1B stitch, which creates a brioche fabric. Decreases then shape the crown. The band is turned up and the edge tacked down or secured with a button. If desired, use a commercial or hand-crafted pompom to adorn the top of the hat.
