Vertisols are clay-rich soils that shrink and swell with changes in moisture content. During dry periods, the soil volume shrinks and deep wide cracks form. The soil volume then expands as it wets up.

Vertisol soil is excellent for growing Wheat - the motif of this shawl.

The shawl is knit horizontally from tip to tip. A small number of stitches are cast on, then increased each knit row until the lace pattern commences. The shawl can be shortened or lengthened by changing the number of times you repeat the motif.
