This is knitting at its easiest. I have written this pattern for beginner knitters. Included in the pattern are links to tutorials for some of the scarier aspects of knitting a stocking.
Over the many years that I have knit custom items, the most common order was for family sets of Christmas stockings. When I started teaching knitting lessons, I was asked to teach beginner knitters how to make a Christmas stocking. I searched for a basic stocking pattern that was knit flat but couldn’t find one that worked. I decided to write my own. Beginner knitters were amazed how easy it is to knit something with shape.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Approx length from beginning to toe tip, laid flat: 24 inches (60 cm); Approx circumference, not stretched: 14 inches (35 cm)

GAUGE: In stocking stitch; 16 sts x 23 rows = 4” (10cm)
Because this is not a fitted item, the gauge is not as important. The measurements may differ if your gauge is different.

YARN USED in photos: This yarn is listed as a worsted on the label but shows as an aran on Ravlery. Choose a heavier worsted yarn so the fabric will be more dense.
I have knit this sample in a basic red with white heel, toe, and cuff but there’s so many opportunities to have fun. Use self striping yarn, create stripes using different colours, knit the leg in one colour and the foot in another. Have fun and make your family a whole set.
