The eeriest holiday of the year, Halloween, stems from an ancient Celtic feast for the celebration of the dead called “Samhain”. When it comes to Halloween, there are a lot of superstitions related to bats, as baleful beacons of bad luck and evil. And, although the bat is typically seen as the poster child for the villainous vampire, only sporadic species actually binge on blood; most bats are friendly fructivores and essential in their ecosystems for pollinating plants and scattering seeds.

This 36 cm wide bat was knitted on 2.25 mm double pointed needles (UK 13, US 1) in Rowan Felted Tweed (159) carbon, (175) cinnamon, Drops Baby Merino (23) light beige and (49) desert rose and some added strands of Drops Kid-Silk to make the bats’ body look more furry. You can use heavier yarn and thicker needles and your bat will turn out a little bigger.
The body was stuffed with soft toy filling and thin wire can be used to stretch the wings, so they can be arranged in any pose you wish.

It is an easy to medium project, knitted flat and in the round, with minimal intarsia color work, short rows and i-cords. All is comprehensively explained and illustrated in the pattern.

Have a blood-tingling Halloween! Viv
