Vesterland Hat
Bring on the vibrant colors of Nordic knitting! Designed for Knit Picks Strands of Color collection, the Vesterland hat features a lined band for extra warmth, unique patterns on the band and crown, and an optional tassel for traditional flair. The hat uses four different colors and could be knit in a variety of colorways to suit many different tastes. The hat is knit in one piece in the round, from band lining to crown.
This pattern includes three sizes: child (17-19” head circumference), adult small (20-22” head circumference), adult large (23-24” head circumference).
The gauge is 28 stitches and 34 rows over 4” in stranded stockinette stitch.
This pattern is recommended for intermediate knitters. You must be able to use basic stranded knitting techniques, follow a two-color chart, and work basic decreases (K2tog).You will only work with two colors at a time, with no long carries.
The suggested yarn for the Vesterland Hat is Knit Picks Palette, but it can be knit in any fingering/sock yarn. The design will work well in any four contrasting colors. The largest size hat requires approximately 225 yards of MC and less than 200 yards for each of the contrast colors. For the version featured here, I used one ball each of Knit Picks Palette (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 231 yards/50g): MC Calypso Heather 24009, C1 Midnight Heather 25540, C2 Custard 24558, C3 Pimento 24246. 100% Peruvian highland wool, sport weight yarn. You will also need 16” circular needles and double pointed needles in size US 4 or whatever size necessary to get the gauge, and 16” needles one size smaller for the lining, as well as DPNs.
This pattern includes written instructions and two-color charts, and instructions for creating the optional tassel.
