Inspired by the seafaring traditions of Britain, this modern style gansey-patterned men’s jumper is closely-fitted (1in/2.5cm ease) in keeping with traditional fisherman’s jumpers. Worked in two easy-to-remember, traditional gansey stitch patterns, little construction details (like a gusset) give a clean fit at the armholes, accommodating the more modern drop sleeve. It’s sized from 32 – 60” chest so there’s plenty of range to fit any of the men in your life. This knit shines in the Wensleydale Longwool DK, which is a gorgeous wool from a funky sheep breed, born, bred, and spun all in Yorkshire.
Wensleydale Longwool has a slight halo, which comes out more once blocked, and a bit of shine as well which highlights these textured stitches beautifully. Wensleydale tends to look a bit fine on the needle when first swatched up, so don’t worry if you can see a bit of air between your stitches. Be sure to give it a bath before you check your gauge (as recommended in the pattern), as the stitches fill out and can change the tension a bit. Try it with the recommended needles first, block, then change if needed.
This jumper is knitted in the round up to the armholes, with an armhole gusset starting after the garter stitch band at the chest. The front and back drop shoulder/chest sections are then worked back & forth and grafted along the top of the drop sleeve, with sleeve stitches then picked up around the drop shoulder edge and knitted down, finishing with a garter stitch cuff to mirror styling throughout.
