Made from two nineteenth-century patterns: a counterpane square from The Lady’s Assistant in Knitting, Netting, and Crochet (1840) by Jane Gaugain and the knitted fringe traditionally used to edge Mountmellick embroidery as related in Weldon’s Practical Mountmellick Embroidery, First Series (1880s).
