Victorian Triangle Strip
This easy pattern is from 1841 The Lady’s Assistant for…Knitting, Netting and Crochet Work by Mrs. Gaugain, 4th edition, p. 124, #67. With no image to go by, this pattern was a pleasant surprise and it’s reversible! The original pattern made a fine doily knit on U.K. #17 (U.S. #000) needles but this pattern can be used with any block-able thread/yarn and needles and made to any length.
The finished project can be trimmed in fringe or shell stitch as the original pattern suggested or with an edging of your choice or left plain. I changed the 2 edge stitches to selvage stitches to make it easier to sew as an afghan strip. You can make this piece wider by adding stitches in multiples of 18. The pattern has 14 rows: work rows 1 through 7, then rows 7 through 1.
The sample shown is 7” wide (59 stitches).
Skills needed: long-tail cast on, slip, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance.
11 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 14 rows (1 inch) of a 59-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
