Viking Shawlette
Inspired by the shapes of the large Viking ships I saw while in Scandinavia this summer, the Viking Shawlette is what resulted when I started playing around with some blue, self-striping sock yarn. The ship shape can clearly be seen when the shawl is viewed in full with both points of the shawlette pointing skyward just as the ends of the Viking ships did. The “front” of the shawlette even ornamentally curls up & inwards, and the scalloped border adorns the outside front of the shawlette in similar fashion to the decorations the Vikings had on the exterior front of their ships. As unusual as this representation sounds for a shawlette, the result is very wearable and has excellent drape. It is a simple, asymmetrical garter stitch pattern knit entirely on the bias, and really shows of a self-striping yarn nicely. You can knit it to whatever size you like, but I took mine out to a bit over 6 feet (about 500 yards fingering weight) to give it more wrapability. At this length, and worked in fingering weight sock yarn, the widest point is about a foot. The border is a simple crochet on one side of the shawlette. This is a great stash-busting project!
