Viking Woman Shawl (from my Celtic Shawl Collection) is a very soft, comfy, lightweight shawl using bold colors and simple lace and colorwork designs to pay tribute to the lives and confidence of early Viking women.
The design calls for carrying 2 strands of Juniper Moon Farms’ Findley but a single strand in a solid color would make a lovely, dressy shawl. Or make the whole thing heathered (or stripe it) with a solid border… there are many options to create the perfect shawl that gives you that feeling of total contentment when you wrap it around your shoulders.
This shawl is worked end-to-end in a seamless manner and can be adjusted by simply adding or reducing repeat sections. Additional options for colorwork designs are included in the pattern.
Viking Woman Shawl tells the story of the lives of several famous women in Viking history as they navigated open and stormy seas, dealt with power struggles and political chaos, charted new territories, and above all, took care of their families and people.
These influential Viking women include a queen named “Unn the Deep Minded” whose husband and son both died in battle. She married her daughters to Orkney nobility and went to Iceland. She was the first great matriarch of Viking nobility in Iceland where she gave away land and freed slaves. She is important because of what she managed to accomplish as a woman as well as her unique bending of the gender roles in Iceland.
Emma of Normandy was the Queen of Denmark, England, and Norway in the early 1000’s and played a major role in the North Sea Empire. Two of her sons would later become the king of England and two of her stepsons also became kings of England. Emma helped shaped the English throne for over 60 years, making her a very important Viking woman.
