An easy rug or coat for vintage G1 My Little Pony toys! Great for the fashionable little horse in your life. I’ve included pictures of the process in the PDF, which I admit might not be that good, but it’s better than nothing I think :-)

Please note that I don’t have all pony types—this pattern has been tested on adult, baby and newborn earth ponies. For maximum specificity, I tested this on the following G1 pony poses:

  • Shy/Bow Tie pose
  • Baby Ember pose
  • Bubbles pose
  • Newborn Dangles pose

It should work fine on unicorns, too, if the body shapes are similar.

I’m uncertain about the fit on pegasus ponies because of the wings. I also can’t test on daddy, boy or big brother ponies, because I don’t have any in my collection. But I’m including some tweaks to the pattern that, although intended for yarn that leans on the thinner side, might enlarge the final rug enough to fit them when done using worsted or bulky yarn. Don’t quote me on that one, though…

As an optional add-on, I’ve also included a pattern for a simple hood that can be sewn onto a rug. Perfect for dress-up! Make a yellow one for a raincoat, a red one for a Little Red Riding Hood costume, brown for a monk or Jedi, or pair a red hood with a blue “cape” for a heroic pony! Note that the hood is a little bit baggy—this is to make room for the ears and mane.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 4mm straight needles
  • Scraps of worsted weight yarn
  • Stitch holder
  • Scissors, needle and thread
  • Small button
  • Darning needle
  • Stitch marker (optional)

Required techniques:
Cast on, cast off, knit and purl (stockinette stitch), k2tog, using a stitch holder, and casting on stitches in the middle of a row.

For the last one, I use the simple cast on technique demonstrated in the video below, but you can use whatever works for you!

I’ve included the link in the pattern for convenience. Gauge is not really important here.

Enjoy!
