When your soul and body needs a little hug, cast on a dream yarn and lose yourself in the meditative act of knitting. Yes, I have to admit, the inspiration for this shawl came from Tukuwool yarn. Meeting with these colors, I already saw the end result. This delicate knit seems to my eyes so vintage and classy, and just feels right. „Sall“ means shawl in Estonian.

Vintage Sall is a crescent shape shawl with a garter stitch body and a bold lace contrasting edging. Knit it for yourself as an eye-catcher or bless a friend with it as a gift. Knit in Tukuwool in two different shades of sock yarn and it will wrap your shoulders like a dream. I’m still admiring these colors. The shawl is worked with two colors but it will work as a one color version also.

Finished measurements:
After blocking the shawl’s measurement will be approximately 200cm/78“ wingspan along top edge and 66cm/26“ long at center depth.
Lace width is approx 19cm/7.5“

Yarn:
Body part: 4 skeins Tukuwool sock (sport weight), 160m/175yards per 50g
(total = 200gr / 700yds / 645m).

Lace border: a little bit more than 3 skeins Tukuwool sock.
(total = 160gr / 550yds / 510m)

Needles:
3.5mm/US 4 circular needles, 100cm/40“ long for body
4.00/US 6 circular needles, 100cm/40 long for lace border
or size to obtain right gauge

Other:
Tapestry needle for weaving, scissors

Gauge:
20 sts and 30 rows = 10cm/4“ in Garter St body pattern on smaller needles, measured flat after blocking

This delicate Vintage Sall is worked in different steps. First, the textured body is worked down and out from center of top edge starting with a garter stitch tab. After that it is worked from the top down with increases (3 sts) at the beginning and end (3 sts) of each right side row to create the crescent shape with simple meditative garter stitch. Then the classy vintage, wide lacy border edging is worked sideways, and attached to the body by means of simple decreases and slipped stitches. The shawl is bound off in this way. This is used to add the edging.

A bonus feature of this shawl is that an exact stitch count is not necessary when starting the lace border. It is easy to adjust the size of the shawl. All increases and decreases are worked on RS (except working with lace border). You can do less or more pattern repeats as you like.
