Vintage Sport Socks emerged from my collection of hundreds of knitting pattern books (1930–1960) as an ideal choice to illustrate “department store knitting.” Although sweaters, socks, and baby knits dominated patterns during this time, I found my collection included six issues of Bear Brand Hand Knit Socks for Men, Women, Children updated from 1950 at least through the late 1960s (the price increased over the years from 35¢ to $2.50). The pattern that inspired Vintage Sport Socks appeared in all six issues, indicating a most popular choice among knitters.
