Elegance with a classic feel, the Visconti Shrug is named for Italian film director Luchino Visconti, whose masterpieces embody Italian neorealist cinema. The Visconti Shrug brings back the timeless grandeur of the big screen era with its sumptuous texture and graceful lines. It will work perfectly for any formal occasion, from prom gown to a night on the town.
Visconti is ingeniously constructed and is worked flat in one piece, with sideways construction and short rows for shaping. The sleeves are picked up and worked in the round, and the fronts are ruched and secured in place with tab facings. One large decorative button finishes the shrug.
This pattern offers three size options, to fit a 32-40 (42-48, 50-56)” chest with up to 6” of negative ease. The sideways construction and garter stitch make this garment very stretchy.
The gauge is 10 sts and 14 rows = 4” in Garter Stitch, blocked.
This pattern will work well for beginners with some basic knitting experience. The entire garment is worked in Garter Stitch. You will need to use the cable cast on technique, there will be some tricky construction, and some finishing work at the end.
For the shrug featured here, I used Knit Picks Fable Fur (100% Polyester; 71 yds/100g). You will need 6 (8, 10) balls of Oso (#27941).
You will also need size US 13 (9.0mm) 16” and 32” circular needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. The design also calls for one 2” decorative button.
This pattern includes a schematic and full written instructions. Please check out my blog post for a tutorial on construction of the shrug: https://bridgetpupillodesigns.com/2020/08/01/visconti-con...
