Our Next stop our journey south is the city of Viseu.

Viseu is still deep in wine country, but it also has the iconic “Painel de Azulejo do Rossio”, which is a hand-painted tile panel. The panel depicts the typical clothing of the region, characters and scenes of the traditional daily life as well 5 different representations of castle towers. This panel was inaugurated on December 13, 1931 and has since been recognized as part of the city’s Heritage and is therefore legally protected as a part of Viseu’s Heritage. This beautiful panel of tiles was painted by Joaquim Lopes from Porto and to this day is his largest creation.
It is on the “Portuguese Azulejos” that I’ve based my design for these socks. I’ve gone a more geometrical route to make it easier, as the majority of the beautiful tiles you can find throughout Portugal are very intricate and detailed.

A nossa seguinte paragem para o sul será Viseu

Viseu ainda está no centro da região vinícola, mas também tem o icônico “Painel de Azulejo do Rossio”, que é um painel de azulejos pintados à mão. O painel retrata o vestuário típico da região, personagens e cenas do quotidiano tradicional, bem como 5 representações diferentes das torres do castelo. Este painel foi inaugurado a 13 de dezembro de 1931 e desde então é reconhecido como Património da cidade, estando assim protegido legalmente como Património de Viseu. Este belo painel de azulejos foi pintado por Joaquim Lopes do Porto e até hoje é a sua maior criação.
Por isso, é nos “Azulejos Portugueses” que baseei o meu design para estas meias. Escolhi umas imagens mais geométrico para facilitar, pois a maioria dos belos azulejos que podem encontrar em Portugal são muito intrincados e detalhados.
