The body of this top-down triangular shawlette is worked in an easy lace pattern with a hint of texture that flows smoothly into a simple scalloped edge. Two variations provide options to suit any yarn: allover lace works well with even the most highly variegated skeins, while stripes of lace and stockinette add interest to a subtler semisolid or solid color - or even a gradient!

Designed as a one-skein project, Vitruvian can be adapted to use as much yarn as you have available. Specific instructions are included for two sizes - 52 (62) inches across the top and 26 (29) inches from upper edge to lower point, using fingering weight yarn with more or less yardage per 100g and at slightly different gauges. But the size is easily customizable, and detailed notes are provided for working a custom size. Pattern instructions are given in both written and charted form.

Yardage note: Each sample was worked with a single skein. However, both skeins were overweight: the Casbah shawl used 114g (with 11g left over) and the one in Plucky Single used 111g (with less than 3g left over). If you have limited yardage available, be prepared to adjust the number of rows worked if needed, consulting the notes for custom sizing.

The name Vitruvian is inspired by the lace motif, which reminds me of a figure with outstretched arms - as seen in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian Man drawing.
