Vivja is a scarf with lace and nupps. It’s knitted in a single piece from the bottom up. The pattern assumes that you can read charts and have some experience knitting lace. A link is provided for 2 techniques to work nupps. The pattern has been test-knitted.

Vivja is part of my new series Along the Whale Road, which highlights yarns from places around the North Atlantic where the Vikings settled. The sample scarf used woollen-spun lamb’s wool from Norway.

The “whale road” is a Norse kenning for the sea.

The name “Vivja” can be found on a runestone in Jæren, Norway. The inscription reads “Jeg rister runer inn for Vivja, kjæresten” (I write runes for Vivja, beloved).
