Vla Shawl is an enormous, slightly shallow half-circle wrap, knit in DK to worsted weight yarn. As shown, it takes 3 skeins of Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok 150 in the Cast Iron colorway. The neutral colors of the big 150g skeins of Woolstok make a cozy natural-looking wrap, but this project might also lend itself well to special single skeins that knit up well together for more of a multicolor, patchwork/scrap effect.

This shawl is knit from the bottom up, so the first few repeats are long--but the pace of the project picks up as you go, and there’s no lengthy bindoff at the end. It’s a long, meditative project, with a main repeat that’s easy to memorize, and the end result is a scarf on the scale of a small blanket.

At 82” across the top, this half circle is massive when knit at the recommended gauge of 13sts and 29 rows, blocked, in pattern.

Materials:
1020 yards of dk- or worsted-weight yarn
40”+ circular needles in US 8/5.0mm, or size needed for gauge
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

One note: this shawl’s main motif draws in a bit, so blocking is fairly important--the stitch pattern opens up and the drape is much better, and it improves the wearability quite a bit.

The official name of the pattern is VLA, which I am mentally pronouncing “vlah,” like a vampire; very goth. This is because the shawl is very large.
The working title was Heir of the Dog, because it’s based loosely on the Dog Days 1 kerchief.
