Volo - to fly, speed, move rapidly

The plane’s wings soared high above the tiny
island in WWII, the gunmetal gray glinting against the
cloudless blue sky…

Volo, non valeo. I fly, but I am not whole.

No longer on an island, but trapped as an island.
Memories faded, “I fly,” “I love you” ways of reaching
out to the world around.

Volo, non valeo. I am willing, but unable.

After 66 years of marriage, she is unable to keep him from
fading farther away each day. But Alzheimer’s has not
taken away our ability to love and support each other and
fight for a cure.

“Il volo” means “the fight.”

We are willing to do whatever it takes, to raise the funds,
to make it happen. None of us walk alone, and those with
Alzheimer’s won’t either.

The blue recalls the sky and the water surrounding the
island of Biak. The curved edges the wings of the long-ago
planes which landed during WWII and those he flew once
safely home.

The Longest Day Challenge

To honor those whose every day is the Longest Day and those who love them.
This pattern was written in support of dear friends who
love the gentleman who now flies only in faint memories,
and all those who care and support for loved ones living
with Alzheimer’s.

All proceeds from the sale of Volo will go to the
Alzheimer’s Association forever.

This crescent shaped shawl is worked lengthwise with a knitted as-you-go border.

Any weight yarn may be used and needle size will vary depending on yarn chosen. Yarns with a higher acrylic content will not block as well as those with higher natural fiber content. The suggested yarn was chosen because of the color. The acrylic/cotton content is not the best for holding the lace open.

Suggested yarn amounts:
DK/sportweight: 350-400 yards
Worsted/Aran (Malabrigo Twist was used): 450-475 yards

The gauge on Malabrigo Twist was 16 st and 24 rows= 4 inches using size 8 needles
