In 1893 New Zealand became the first self governing country in the world with universal women’s suffrage. But women were not allowed to run for office. In the past 125 years most of the world has gotten it’s shit together in terms of women’s voting rights and right to stand for election, but we still see women woefully underrepresented in elected government. It’s been 101 years since Jeannette Rankin was elected as the first woman to serve in the US Congress, but our national legislature is still only about 20% women. Now more than ever we need to be remembering what women have been fighting for for centuries, celebrating our progress as a civilization, but reminding ourselves that the work is not over.
If you are a bad bitch knitter who would have fought for voter equality 100 years ago, and who cares about women’s civic engagement today, these are the socks for you.

Like all Original Spin patterns, part of the sale of this pattern goes to an organization doing important work in our world. This sock’s proceeds go, fittingly, to She Should Run, a non-partisan organization working to increase the number of women running for and being elected to public office at all levels of government in the US.
