Vriesea
Meditative stitch, easy to add touch of color, fabulous result!
Vriesea is a rectangular shawl worked outwards from the middle, with bright stripes running along the length of the shawl finished with little tassels at the end of each stripe.
The textured lacy stitch is directional, so the work starts at the center; when half of the shawl is done, the yarn is joined to the starting chain (center) to work in the opposite direction and make the other half. After the base is finished using the main color only, the contrasting stripes are crocheted on the surface of the fabric in the grooves designated for them, adding fun color accents.
This pattern can be used for any weight yarn and for any size from a skinny scarf to a blanket. The sample is made using two strands of light fingering weight yarns (one smooth and one mohair) making a DK weight yarn and is 175 cm / 67” long; 37 cm / 14.5“ wide.
Customize it to make it your own! Try it in bulky weight to make a statement scarf, or in lace for an elegant stole! Adjust the size all the way from a skinny scarf to a blanket! Play with color – use a gradient yarn for the vertical stripes, or make each vertical stripe in a different color and mix them all with the fringe, or make the fringe in a third color! Scatter some crocheted flowers near the edges… Have fun with it!
