Waffles Overdose Mitts
About this design
I freely confess that I have fallen in love with waffle stitch and its variations. Since releasing my Waffles for Brunch Beanie design in 2017 I have continued to tinker with waffle stitch and its variants in other designs. Perhaps the thing I love most about this stitch is its versatility; whether you use two strongly contrasting yarns to produce lines of colour that float lightly across the surface of the fabric or more closely matched colours to produce subtle textures, this stitch pattern can be used for designs that are suitable for all genders and all ages.
As with the Waffles for Brunch Beanie, these unisex mitts will knit up quickly with 8-ply/double knitting yarn and they are a perfect project to use up two orphaned 50 g balls of yarn from your stash. This design is also perfect for using up bits and pieces from your stash for the contrast colour. You might even decide to take the plunge and make a Magic Ball for your contrast colour (go on, you know you want to ☺).
Why not make a pair for yourself first before rattling off another pair as a gift for a friend? And then take yourself and your friend off to your nearest café, order your favourite breakfast (waffles included!), and a cup of coffee and then park yourself at an outdoor table and enjoy the weather and some good company.

Note: This is a Magic Ball Friendly Pattern. Please read the free accompanying information booklet “Magic Ball Musings” for guidance on how to construct a Magic Ball. The Construction Notes also include suggestions for the best type of Magic Ball for this pattern.

Size
Finished dimensions at the circumference of the widest part of the palm are:
Small - 16.7 cm/6 2/3 inches, Medium - 19 cm/7 ½ inches, Large - 21 cm/8 1/3 inches
Please choose a size that matches or is no more than 2 cm/3/4 inch less than the circumference of your hand (measured at the widest part of your palm). Instructions for the larger sizes are given in brackets.
Tension
24 stitches x 44 rows over 10 cm/4 inches in waffle stitch knitted in the round using 4.00 mm (US size 6, UK size 8). A close match for tension is important for this pattern in order to ensure a good fit. Please move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match.
Yarn
Approximately 50 g in two contrasting colours of any 8-ply/double knitting yarn that knits to match the required tension gauge (equivalent to 100 metres/109 yards per 50 g).
Needles
4.00 mm (US size 6, UK size 8) needles. You can use double-pointed needles, two short circular needles or one long circular needle using the Magic Loop technique for this design.
Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.
Stitch marker.
Waste yarn for provisional bind-off.
Pattern
This pattern includes written and charted instructions as well as links to video tutorials (produced by other people) for most of the techniques used in the design.
